INTRODUCTION: THE ASIAN YOUTH FORUM (AYF)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AYF AIMS
<> The Asian Youth Forum is an international youth event which brings together college-aged young people from across Asia for academic seminars, intercultural workshops, social events and interpersonal exchanges
<> The aims of the AYF are to promote international understanding, intercultural communication and leadership skills through the medium of English-as-an-international-language
<> Previous AYF events have been held in Korea (1999), Japan (2001), Taiwan (2002), Russia (2004), Thailand (2007), Japan (2008), and Philippines (2009). The 2010 AYF will be held in Seoul, South Korea sometime in October.
AYF PARTICIPANTS
<> Each AYF brings together 80 - 100 students from 10 - 15 Asian countries for 5 – 7 days
<> AYF participants must be Asian university students age 18 – 25 with an interest in Asia and a good command of English
<> AYF is organized by an AYF Organizing Committee in cooperation with the PAC Committee and host ELT association
<> the basic format is that Asian EFL teachers attending PAC conferences bring students from their home countries
<> we usually request “AYF national delegations” from ELT associations in Asia such as Japan (JALT), Korea (KoTESOL), Thailand (Thai TESOL) and Russia (FEELTA).
<> individual Asian students also apply on their own to our website and are selected by our AYF committee
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
<> each AYF event is organized by a team consisting of:
* AYF advisors (Asia-based EFL college instructors) working with appointed officers from PAC
* AYF student leaders (elected at the previous AYF event)
* an AYF host country team (organized by the ELT hosting association)
AYF DELEGATIONS FROM PAC NATIONS
<> we are always eager to get AYF student delegations from PAC nations in Asia
<> we are hoping for support and funding from national EFL associations in each country
<> if your ELT association can help put together an AYF student team for your country, please let us know
<> this would require work on AYF student recruitment, funding and organizing
AYF COSTS
<> AYF students need to pay 2 costs:
* round-trip travel expenses to AYF from their home country
* a US $200 participation fee (to cover 1 week’s accommodation, meals and program)
<> students can be asked to pay these costs on their own or their national EFL association can help subsidize them
